Very thorough, well investigated article that has no bearing on the matter.
The question is not what the Passover used---it is about the New Wine Skin.
Jesus laid out what was going to happen, "You can't pour New Wine into Old Wine Skins". Christianity is clothed in NEW Wine Skins--in other words, New way of doing things. Just as we are reborn in Christ, The Faith is REBORN into a NEW Wine Skin. Everything flows from that.
Yes, unleavened bread was used, communally by the Jews to signify their covenant with God. That is the OLD Covenant.
We are in the NEW Covenant, and it requires New stuff. That New stuff is Leavened Bread. See, in Judaism, they didn't have Christ. The Unleavened bread signifies that Judaism is FLAT. No power.
On the other hand, Leavened Bread has Yeast in it that Unleavened bread does not. What does that signify?---Christ is the Yeast, the Leavens The Faith--very different. Christianity is NOT Judaism. Judaism is flat and tasteless. Leavened Bread is alive and it grows on its own due to what? Yeast! Did not Christ tell us “The kingdom of God is like leaven… it is hidden in the dough until it leavens the whole lump”
What is Yeast?
"The kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened." (Matthew 13:33)
The Yeast is Christ added to The Faith. The Yeast is a symbol of the Holy Spirit that works in The Church. Leavened Bread is a symbol of The Church and of a NEW Covenant. A Better Covenant. A PERFECT Covenant.
Unleavened Bread was the bread of traveling, of poverty. The Unleavened Bread of Judaism shows that it was travelling, and never settled. Leavened Bread shows the Stability and HOME that is Christianity.
See, the Passover was transfigured into the Eucharist. Just as Man was Transfigured When Jesus died on the Cross, spent three days dead and rose on the First Day--the bread becomes a symbol of that Transformation. Unleavened, dead, Resurrection of Christ, Leavened Bread, Alive, growing. We don't celebrate the dead on Sunday, but the Resurrection that transformed us all, gave us life! That is why Leavened Bread is to be consecrated.
One can see that the use of unleavened bread by the Latin West as Judaizing.
Christian Theology is based on New Wine Skin ideology. Yes, the Catholics are right--but we are NOT celebrating Passover--but a joyful banquet with Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, every Sunday morning! In Luke 22:16, Jesus says, “For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God,”
We eat at the Lord's banquet with leavened bread. (For large congregations, I don't see anything wrong with consecrating both species to be handed out to the faithful or using unleavened bread to held in the tabernacle for the sick or people that miss Sunday.)
Thank you for sharing. To me, that is a huge problem! And one that would literally prevent me from converting to Orthodox...I will re-read...
That's way more than I ever wanted to know! Beautiful piece though.
That was very interesting! Thank you for this essay.
I learned a lot about the Eucharist. This article was a lot to take in. Well written.
